Poseidon's Orchestra

Gurgles and swooshes creep in at low tide.
Shh.....Shhhh.....Shh.....Shhhh.....
Listen closer to the rhythm of the waves -
music gently reverberates from the bellows below.
As the sea level rises,
so do the grumbles which turn to bountiful roars.
From the snorting of a horse
to more frequent splutters
to the violent roars of dragons swooping in
- the crescendo of the piece.

Poseidon's Orchestra.

One of the best kept secrets of San Francisco is the Wave Organ, a series of pipes running into the Bay in the Marina district. Built of concrete, the pipes are of varying sizes and angles, allowing them to produce an eclectic collection of sounds. A smattering of listening stations allow visitors to enjoy the music of the pipes. The best time to hear the pipes is at high tide when the water is able to interact with them the most. Fortunately, I happened to time my venture after a long night in the city and was able to find my way down the uncharted paths to this sound garden pleasure as the peak of the tide approached.
