What's so magical about these simple bulb flowers? For me, it's the way they respond to warmth and light. Like a warm blooded creature, it relaxes and opens to embrace the sun. The petals unfold to reveal a brightly marked center that serves as a bull's-eye target for pollinators. And as the sun hides and the air cools, the petals reclose to keep secret the flower's inner vitality.
Below are some photos of my tulips as they lived out their days in my apartment. I watched as multiple shots with the flash tricked the tulips into spreading their petals open.
