Diary of a Gardener - The Winter Pages

A cold covered the earth.
The sun slept under a blanket of clouds.
I dug a shallow canal,
Carefully dropped little grains
One by one – proper spacing noted.
Seeds were planted,
Covered with earth.

The rains came.
And came.
The sky wept for weeks.
Icy tears, followed by ones more temperate
Denoting a heated mood.

I slept – hibernated.

My seeds didn’t.
Insulated under the dirt,
Life came to be.

Slender green arms broke,
No, wiggled through the ceiling.
Free!
Reaching toward the sun,
That beacon of warmth and life.

I go to eat.
I take from the nourishing dirt.
Thank you sun.
Thank you rain.
Thank you earth.
